Are you considering a major home improvement project — perhaps remodeling a bathroom or the kitchen? Then be prepared for some potentially alarming news, as the Trump administration’s new $200 billion in tariffs could mean higher home remodeling costs. New estimates from the National Association of Home Builders indicate that of the 6,000 items on the list of goods imported from China that are now subject to tariffs, 463 are “ubiquitous” in home construction and remodeling. These goods and materials include everything from iron nails to flooring to granite countertops, tiles, sinks, paints, cabinets, wooden and steel doors, windows, lighting, appliances and more.
Some estimate the new tariffs will affect up to 15 to 20 percent of the products in a typical home remodel project. This could lead to the need for increases in costs to consumers of 5 to 10 percent or more. What’s more, if the White House follows through on stated plans to raise the tariff again, from 10 to 25 percent early next year, this could mean even more tough choices and unforeseeable challenges ahead for both consumers and home remodelers, as vendor pricing and availability of products affected by the tariffs become increasingly difficult to predict.
Despite all this, we remain optimistic about the continued success of our industry and our ability to thrive as a company—and we will always be committed to doing right by our customers, no matter what the future brings. Since 1992, J&J Construction has grown from a small one-man firm to one of the area’s largest and best-reviewed remodeling companies. “I started J&J Construction with the goal of reversing the negative experience so many people have with contractors,” says Joe Censullo, President of J&J Construction of Illinois. “I have always insisted on providing customers with the best experience possible, and that starts with ethics and treating customers right. I believe this approach to remodeling a home produces trust, confidence, and satisfaction. Our goal has been and will continue to be to create something extraordinary, which will alleviate stress and frustration for the homeowner throughout the entire process. And that’s a promise.”
Ultimately for consumers, the most important message or lesson to be gained from these recent and pending tariffs is this: If you’re considering a home remodeling project, our advice is to get that process going sooner rather than later. As the trade wars and policy battles continue to affect our markets in negative and unpredictable ways, it’s not unreasonable to be concerned about further increases in cost and other challenges for our industry and consumers down the road. Homeowners considering a remodeling project would be wise to consider the potentially significant cost of waiting and get things rolling as soon as possible.
